Reginald McCabe, Doorman, 50s Reginald -- everybody but Farnsworth calls him "Reggie" or "Reg" -- McCabe is a short, stocky Scot. From the moment you arrive, he makes it clear that he's on your side in your struggle against the butler, concierge and chef. Nervous and fidgety, Reggie is required to leap into action when guests arrive. He opens doors, summons staff, orders limousines, choreographs a complex sequence of welcoming events designed to assure guests that they're in the most capable of hands. Reggie has been the doorman at some of the world's finest hotels. Whenever he leaves a place, he requests that he be allowed to purchase one of the hotel uniforms to add to his collection. Four years ago, Lord Hanover was traveling abroad and encountered Reggie at the Olgilvie in New York City. Just before he departed, Lord Hanover offered him the position he now holds at Manor House. Their negotiations were unusual. Reggie was not impressed that Hanover was offering him a wage that amounted to nearly twice as much as he had ever made before. What concerned him was activity: would there be enough of it on a remote rural English estate? Lord Hanover assured him that Manor House was often a lively and gala scene, despite its relative isolation, that interesting and unusual people frequently arrived from all over the world to attend events, some of which bordered on the spectacular. Warily, McCabe took the job, figuring that at least he'd finally have the chance to wear all of the costumes he'd been collecting all these years. His passion is football and he loves managing the local amateur team , the Yobwell Yoblers, on which Bruce Sherlock is a star player. The middle-aged but still highly athletic doorman has an unusual passion and talent--dancing Irish jigs. Pub regulars know that at any given moment, without warning, a fiddle might strike up prompting Ol' Reg to leap into an impromptu performance. Reggie McCabe is the only Manor House servant that Farnsworth, or his father before him, didn't personally hire. The butler has long resented both Lord Hanover and Reggie for this breach. Nowadays Reggie's best friend at the manor is the irrepressible Bruce Sherlock, with whom he lifts a pint when he is off-duty. During these drinking bouts they commiserate on the sad state of affairs at the manor, which they feel is largely due to the machinations of Farnsworth and Van Scoy. Reggie has recently fallen for Mildred Simmons, the manor housekeeper, who seems likewise smitten. |
